Early 997 problem updating pcm and satnav
Friday 8th February 2013
I have recently acquired my first Porsche, a late 2004 registered 997 C2.
When I discovered that the dvd satnav disc was 2004 I bought some oem discs to update to 2012 satnav. It also comes with CDs for verion B and C pcm software updates.Having looked in to it furtehr, and having read the instructions, I can now see why no previous owner of my car ever bothered to attempt updating the satnav !
As my pcm software appears to be the standard version ie pre version A, the instructions say I must update to version A ( 04202xx) with Porsche CD part number 000.043.205.47.003. I do not have this. Does anyone know where I can get this ? I believe Richard hamilton on this forum may be able to help, so Richard, if you read this can you help please ?
Worse follows. As I have an early 997 Bose amp, I have to junk it and get a later model as apparantly my current one will not work with version A pcm software. I have checked the model number, looks like I am stuffed. If I get a later model Bose amp, I then have to code it and install new software for the amp too. The instructions in the Porsche Technical Bulletin called ' PCM 2.1 and Bose Spare Amplifier Spare Parts Requirements' say this can be done with a PIWIS tester. My local independant does not have this, but uses Autologic. Does anyone know if this will do the same job ?
Presumably the correct sequence is
replace amp
install codes and software for it
install version A pcm software
install version B pcm software
install version C pcm software
install latest maps for satnav DVD
Sorry for all the questions. I am enjoying the car apart from the above !

I personally haven't bothered updating my maps software because of the above hassle. And apparently even if you do follow the correct sequence, there is no guarantee it will work and the maps you currently have may become unusable if the update is unsuccessful.

I have 2004 maps in my 2004 996 C4S. Fortunately I have an original Tom Tom Go which I bought when they first came out and have used nothing else ever since. Sat Nav in Porsches appears to be a waste of space in supplied form..

Thanks everynody for your input.I wonder if anyone has ever managed to do the updates successfully ?
As suggested, I will contact Richard before I make a final decision on this.

It'll still be a crap system even if updated. If you really want a fitted system pay a specialist to fit a new Alpine/Pioneer system.

Yes, having had a look at mine it is crap. Although if pcm satnav is still based on Navteq you would have thought that by the 2012 updates, it should be pretty good by now ...

My previous car was April 2005 997S with 2004 map disc. With 'borrowed' update discs I installed latest revision software with no problems. Then installed later map DVD and all worked fine. My car also had Bose system but no idea what version it was.As suggested, I will contact Richard before I make a final decision on this.
Edit:
Just checked my old notes and the system was at level A before update.

Missed this on Friday. In answer to the original question, yes, I have updated systems in the past. David has been in touch, and is working through it.
I've had Pioneer systems in my previous 996s, but in many ways I prefer the PCM2.1in my Cayman. I find the navigation instructions better (the Pioneer drove me nuts) and it is nice to use the instrument cluster display. Sure, it is only partial postcode, but that isn't the end of the world. Having fitted a Bluetooth phone and iPod adapter, it makes the rest of the system more useable too.

Yes, I've done mine twice and it was very straightforward. My car originally came with 2006 maps, I updated the software and maps in 2009 and recently done the same for 2012 maps. Wasn't difficult at all, just follow the instructions.
